Deans and Principals

Heads of Academic Units, 1914-present

UBC’s academic programmes are organized in Faculties (headed by Deans), and Colleges (headed by Principals).

The Faculties at UBC (some of which are branded as “Schools” or “Colleges”) represent traditional academic disciplines or fields of study and research. They are headed by Deans. The Faculties are in turn organized into departments (traditional academic subjects), schools (professional or graduate-level programmes), and institutes (primarily research-based).

UBC-Vancouver’s Colleges are a newer category, and are intended to facilitate and support interdisciplinary and interprofessional education and research. These units are headed by Principals.

Medicine, Applied Science, and (as of 2018) Education are dual-campus faculties. In these cases, the head of the UBC-Okanagan faculty office reports to the Faculty Dean at UBC-Vancouver.

* From 1916 to 1922 known as the Faculty of Arts. Renamed the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1922/23. In 1963, Arts and Science were split into separate faculties.

* The College was closed in 2013 and its programs were transferred to the relevant faculties.

* From 1914 to 1969 known as the Faculty of Agriculture, and from 1969 to 2005 as the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.

* From 1915 to 1963 part of the Faculty of Arts / Arts and Science. Deans Coleman, Buchanan, and Chant were officially “Dean of Arts and Science”. In 1963, Arts and Science were split into separate faculties.
